Coffee table styling is one of my favorite things to do. And best believe I go all in on them. Your coffee table is the center of the living room. It is such an important piece that it’s vital to design it to the nines.
While it can be a landing space for remote controls and magazines, it’s also a place where your style can come to life.
Here are 5 quick tips on how to style your coffee table.
1. Select a layout
This is literally the first order of business my friend. As it will keep your table visually interesting, balanced, and uncluttered.
If you’re working with an oversized coffee table, whether, rectangle or square, I recommend forming a grid with 3 to 6 sections.
HOW: tape off sections to form a grid and position objects within the squares. This helps compartmentalize your styling and makes the entire task less intimidating.
2. Work with the room.
I style the coffee table last. While I usually have an idea of what I will be using and how I will be styling it, I get the visual inspiration after I’m completely done setting the whole room. This is because I want to keep the coffee table arrangement pieces cohesive with the color scheme of the room.
3. Choose a focal point
Select a piece or two that will stand out as a focal point of your coffee table display. The item doesn't have to be large or overwhelming. It can have an unusual shape or color to spark conversation.
This could also be a place to keep it personal. Tell a story with your coffee table vignette. Let the objects on your coffee table tell a story about your passions and memories. Think sea shells collected from a memorable vacation or a piece from home if you're in a different country or something that reminds you of your loved ones.
4. Add Stacks of Books
Books are literally essential when styling Coffee tables. They add that chic look.
You can stack them or open one. So incorporate books in your designs as much or as little as you want.
5. Think High & Low then Balance
Here, just channel the Michelle Obama in you. “when they go low, you go high” :) . Not exactly in that context but you know what I mean!
Balance is an essential component of any coffee table display. Different heights bring visual interest. To create a more eye-catching vignette, vary the height and scale of your coffee table's decorative objects.
A good rule of thumb I can share with you is when styling your coffee table, avoid tall, clunky objects that obstruct the view of people sitting on either side of the table. Think of a creative way to use pieces of different heights.
Incorporating smaller decorative objects in just the right size will fill in the gaps. This will help make the setup aesthetically pleasing.
Bonus tip because you made it this far:
Keep it Classy & Entertaining
If you're unsure what items to place on your coffee table. Add some classic items like elegant books/magazines and pretty floral arrangement. This is also a chance for you to give your guests a chance to break the ice when seated around the coffee table. Add a few playful items like a vintage board game, deck of cards or dominos to add a bit of whimsy to your space.
Decorative objects, such as an antique magnifying glass, cloche, or gold spheres, decorative trays, candles, crystals, wood beads, Oil burners or diffusers, Small decorative bowls, Coasters, Decorative box and low-maintenance plant are a few options.
Pair curved items with straight, shiny with dull, textured with smooth, and hard with soft.
Please remember at the end of the day, it’s all about you and how you feel in the moment. One thing I do before I start styling tables, I sit on the couch and and take a few deep breaths while my eyes are closed. This calms me down.
Coffee tables are important pieces that bring the whole design look together. Like I said before, I go all in when styling them while letting the house inspire me.
REMEMBER: These tips are here to guide you. They are not rules to follow. Trust me, I don’t follow rules myself.
